TINUBU INAUGURATES NIGERIA REVENUE SERVICE (NRS) HEADQUARTERS, MARKS END OF FIRS ERA

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, 14th April 2026, officially inaugurated the new headquarters of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in Abuja.

The ceremony marked a major milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reform agenda, following the formal dissolution of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The transition was made possible under the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act 2025, which repealed the FIRS Act and established the NRS as the nation’s central tax authority.

Speaking at the inauguration, President Tinubu described the restructuring as a strategic move to modernize Nigeria’s tax administration and align it with global best practices.

He stated that the NRS was created to build a more efficient, transparent, and technology-driven system capable of meeting the demands of a 21st-century economy.

A key objective of the new service is to significantly boost non-oil revenue generation as part of the government’s economic diversification drive.

The President emphasized that improved revenue collection would reduce over-reliance on crude oil and create more fiscal space for critical infrastructure and social investment.

The NRS is also mandated to enhance voluntary tax compliance by simplifying processes, deploying digital platforms, and improving taxpayer services nationwide.

According to government officials, the reform will close loopholes, curb leakages, and ensure fairness in the tax system, thereby strengthening public trust.

President Tinubu noted that a modern and credible revenue institution is vital for fostering economic growth and restoring investor confidence in Nigeria.

He charged the leadership and staff of the NRS to uphold professionalism, integrity, and innovation as they execute their new mandate for the nation.
