In a split 3-2 decision, the Supreme Court of Nigeria invalidated the Peoples Democratic Party’s national convention.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday, April 30, 2026, in Abuja.
It affects the convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.
The apex court’s ruling set aside all outcomes and resolutions from that gathering.
The case arose from a legal challenge over the legitimacy of the Ibadan convention.
The appeal was filed by the faction led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN.
Turaki’s group had asked the court to affirm the convention’s validity.
They argued that due process was followed in organizing the event.
Opposing factions maintained that the convention breached the PDP constitution.
The matter went through the lower courts before reaching the Supreme Court.
After hearing arguments, five justices of the apex court delivered the verdict.
Three justices voted to nullify the convention, while two dissented.
The majority held that the process leading to the convention was flawed.
As a result, all officers elected and decisions taken there are void.
The ruling dismissed the appeal filed by the Turaki-led faction entirely.
The decision is expected to reshape the party’s leadership structure ahead of 2027.
